Cabo de São Vicente

Cabo de São Vicente marks the southwesternmost point of mainland Europe, a limestone headland near Sagres rising close to 75 metres above the Atlantic. The Romans called it Promontorium Sacrum and believed the sun set into the ocean here, and for centuries it was regarded as the edge of the known world. A 19th-century lighthouse, among the most powerful in Europe, still stands at the tip. The cliff edge has few barriers, and visitors gather along it at sunset for open, uninterrupted views over the Atlantic.
